+52 Recent Landscapes is a survey of contemporary ways of making and thinking about landscape within the context of national artistic production.

Since gaining prominence in 17th-century Dutch painting—earning a place within the hierarchy of genres in Western art—landscape has circulated throughout history, adopting the characteristics of different avant-garde movements. In Mexico, the work of major landscape artists of the last century, such as Gerardo Murillo “Dr. Atl” and José María Velasco, consolidated rural perspectives of a nation on the path toward industrialization, while also highlighting creative processes that took place outside artists’ studios and workshops.

In the current context of the Bajío region in Mexico, the perception of landscape is strongly grounded in everyday life—in the rural, urban, and industrial horizons that emerge through the habitual movement between communities.

For the inaugural exhibition of our space, a selection of works by artists from different generations working in Mexico is presented, aiming to open a perspective that questions inherited notions of landscape shaped by art history, as well as the familiarity of the region’s panoramas.

Taking advantage of the versatility that landscape offers as a subject, the exhibition presents a range of current views of the country, brings together different approaches to landscape as a pictorial genre, and expands its traditional formats into other media such as sculpture and video.
