Espectral (2013)
Artist: Juan Pablo Villegas
When spending time inside a camera obscura, turning the lights on and off sets apart its utilitarian value to become a ritual of invocation. Even though artificial light seems to be waiting to be freed, assuming that clarity will come after penumbra is a matter of faith.
As a call for refraction, this ritual of invocation appeals to the spectral, the manifestation of what ‘is’ but wasn’t present in perception. Even within the spectrum, light itself can be darkness to me, defining the relationship between being and appearing.
If illuminating is giving appearance, the possibilities to manipulate the effects of light within the visible spectrum submit the shapes of reality to their own physicality. The processes to influence the images are the catharsis of the ritual, showing what was always there but was taken for granted.
