Dwelling in Collapse by Cynthia Gutiérrez documents the exhibition of the same name presented at Museo Cabañas in Guadalajara and finds material echoes throughout the artist’s practice that fracture a present in crisis. Through the recognition and appropriation of sculptural language, Gutiérrez develops a sharp critique of the hegemonic discourses that reproduce national identity, the political processes that sustain nation-states, the white pedestal, and the exhibition space. Her work proposes a dialogue between reality and fiction, between craftsmanship and the reproductive dynamics of capital, between permanence and that which is capable of change.
