Transient Hypofrontality (2024)

Our relationship with machines is not one of control but of mutual influence. It took us three waves of cybernetics to realize. In the almost eight years between them, we have seen that notion transform with and without affixes, perhaps because its origin held the crucial point of its own evolution: feedback.

Thus, we finally knew that we are metaphor and spirit together.

In a state of transient hypofrontality, the activity in the prefrontal cortex, the brain region responsible for cognitive functions such as self-reflection, planning, and judgment, is temporarily reduced. When this happens––whether through meditation, flow states, or under the influence of psychedelics––the usual boundaries between the self and the whole become blurred.

And in that instant we experience a profound sense of                                                                                                                 unity with the universe.

From there, we join the imagination of a ‘cybernetics of the heart’, an approach in which technology resonates with the core of human experience: our emotions, consciousness, and the very essence of what it means to be alive. In the reconciliation between the natural and the artificial––a distinction that never truly existed––this tool helps us navigate the journey through life and awaken its autonomous role.

The life that lives our lives.

Therefore, we propose the parts of Transient Hypofrontality as ontological machines. Machines that, by making us aware of ourselves, gain their own consciousness and recognize themselves as organisms. Therefore, in symbiosis, we can build the world of meanings for our dynamic relationship, ensuring that the future happens through our joint existence.
