Missing Image (2018)

MURA, Guadalajara, MX

Artists:
Javier M. Rodríguez, Leo Marz, Fabiola Torres Alzaga

Cave paintings for the digital age surround a dark room where pixels are developed onto canvas. Specific moments in which the violent rigor of the frame pierces the gaze and cancels the real. Sounds present in silence, references in brackets. The real and the digital, entangled in a mise en abyme. Entering and exiting the screen as a daily exercise; life is the fourth wall.

The artists worked collaboratively from a selection of images that had been deleted and were found in the trash folder of Leo Marz’s iPhone. These discarded files were reviewed and served as triggers for the artists to take elements of composition, content, or narrative from the images and translate them into their own languages. Despite being individual pieces, each one operates in relation to the others, composing new images as the exhibition space is inhabited. Material once considered unusable and forgotten is reconfigured in the form of painting, sculpture, installation, and video.

In The Lost Image, space is understood as images in potential. Visitors may inhabit the exhibition as a tableau vivant of the recomposed original material. The project seeks to be completed through the active involvement of the audience, taking on the task of registering new visual narratives that emerge from the relationships between the works.

The proposal to work with these three artists arises from their individual interests in film production. On one hand, Javier M. Rodríguez has stood out for his investigations into time and has experimented with formats for projecting moving images. Leo Marz has focused on the construction of the image and audiovisual narrative, abstracting them from the screen to use them as pictorial elements. For her part, Fabiola Torres-Alzaga refers to the complexity of cinematic creation processes through perceptual tricks produced within the limits of the frame.
