Esta es la historia de un ejercicio agridulce.
This is the story of a bittersweet exercise.
After several months of intense academic writing, the invitation to engage with the objects from Joaquín Segura’s collection in a free and experimental format landed like chile piquín on jícama: it made writing stop feeling bland. Besides, summer always seems to invite fiction.
This series of micro-stories gathers together a season of toothaches, walks through the cemetery, insect bites, narco-series marathons, and a deep longing for Mexican food. They call it the Jamaicón syndrome. There are personal memories, fragments of friends and not-so-friends, and characters I never met. It is an exercise driven by a stubborn interest in listening to objects and distorting their stories.
Some of these objects are particularly familiar to me, but I decided to look the other way and pretend I didn’t know them. Let’s just say I crossed the street to avoid having to greet them and make small talk.
I would like to offer my sincere apologies in advance to this selection of objects for falsifying their version of the facts.
Please, don’t shoot the messenger.
