Cynthia Gutiérrez: Rock, Ballast, Dust (2017)
Rock, Ballast, Dust, a solo exhibition by Guadalajara-based artist Cynthia Gutiérrez, brings together three sculptural works and a video to reflect on ruin, absurdity, and failure. An enchanted rock, an obstacle course with no hurdles to jump, something that glitters but is not gold, and a column incapable of bearing weight form a loose dialogue in relation to the words that title the project.
Is being the same as seeming?
Penitent rock, you obstruct the view and block the path. You are ballast out of context, revealing your falseness at close range. Dust you are, and to dust you shall return.
Origin, fortune, or circumstance.
A pillar of compacted dust, you begin at the horizon line and extend toward dusk, enjoying the freedom granted by demolition. No longer must you provide support—pulverized ballast.
Seduction and fetishism.
Talisman of fools, valued for the shine you simulate. Your weight appraised in gold is a swindle upon greed: the disdain of the skilled and the anger of the deceived.
The Olympiad of Sisyphus.
When punishment is eternal, there are neither champions nor defeated. Effort is meaningless—dust of obstinacy, a perpetual refrain.
