San Isidro’s Still (2018)

San Isidro’s Still attempts to link, through a particular setting, the sphere of art with the world of entheogens. San Isidro, in this way, refers to the common name given in Mexico to hallucinogenic mushrooms. Historically, connections between such states of intoxication and art as instigators of profane insight, new perceptions, ritual encounter, and ludic explorations have been remarked. The etymology of entheogen, in fact, could be related to certain terms associated with the artistic process, distinct states of receptiveness, and the becoming of the work of art. By gathering works of 13 artists, from different generations and geographies, the show aims to articulate the sense of interconnectedness between nature and culture, between materials and things, and between perspectives of the whole and the part that is often described as prototypical of the etheogenic. The work of Antonin Artaud or Henri Michaux, for instance, affords glimpses of such experience through their literature and art.

San Isidro’s Still hopes to evoke its mode of reception to be reconciliatory, focusing on commonalities between things more than in differences. Following this logic, the artworks also deal with notions related to the incommensurability of the universe, archaic and symbolic forms, the acknowledgement of the vitality of the natural world, the architecture of geology and minerals, sacred geometries, and the relation between the microcosms and macrocosm. Through their materiality and solutions, the works defy expectation and familiarity, acknowledging a human space that includes myths, dreams, and aesthetic perception, among other factors. As Maurice Merleau-Ponty mentions, it not that this human space has been abolished but “repressed by everyday perception or by objective thought, and which philosophical consciousness rediscovers.” (Phenomenology of Perception (2002) London: Routledge. 335-339)
